It was rare for the amount of koku to increase by that much during peaceful times, and it shows how important the Abe family was in the shogunate. In fact, all the feudal lords up to the fifth lord, Abe Masamitsu, became roju.

The 6th generation, Masatoshi Abe, was unable to become Rojū (rojū), perhaps because Yoji Tanuma was in power, but he was promoted to Osaka Fudai.

After that, the head of the Abe family held important positions in the shogunate until the 9th generation, Abe Shogun, and the administration of the domain was left to a group of vassals. The Oshi domain was close to Edo and was a key point for land and river transportation, but the domain's administration was under strain due to repeated famines, the eruption of Mt. Fuji, and construction work ordered by the shogunate.

Matsudaira family era

When the 9th generation of the Abe family, Masamoto Abe, died of illness at the age of only 3, Tadaya Matsudaira was transferred from the Ise Kuwana domain. After that, the Matsudaira family served as the feudal lord for five generations until the end of the Edo period.

During the era of Tadakuni Matsudaira, the third lord of the domain, after the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, the domain was almost torn into pieces over whether to follow the new government or submit to the shogunate army, but Tadakuni Matsudaira pushed through his illness to unite the domain and form a new They showed their obedience to the government forces.

The last feudal lord, Tadataka Matsudaira, was a talented man who even went to England to study at his own expense after the abolition of the feudal domain and the establishment of prefectures. However, due to scandals caused by former feudal retainers, he was not well-loved by those around him, and ultimately ended his life by becoming a junior high school teacher. His son, Tadahisa Matsudaira, lived from the Meiji era to 1981, and lived a long life of 100 years. Furthermore, Tadahisa Matsudaira's grandson is still alive.

Oshi clan summary

Because the Oshi domain was close to Edo, feudal lords close to the shogunate, such as Shinhan and Fudai, served as the domain lords. For this reason, it was semi-traditional for the lord of the domain to hold important positions in the shogunate, and there are almost no records of the domain carrying out any policy. The Matsudaira family, which became the last feudal lord, still exists today as the former Viscount Matsudaira family, and is said to be the 16th generation of the current head of the clan.

Writer(Writer)I am a writer who loves history, focusing on the Edo period. My hobbies are visiting historical sites, temples and shrines, and reading historical novels. If there is a place you are interested in, you can fly anywhere. I'm secretly happy that the number of sword exhibitions has increased recently thanks to the success of Touken Ranbu.
