Fukuchiyama Domain was a domain that existed in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture.
At the end of the Muromachi period, it was the domain of Akechi Mitsuhide, famous for the Honnoji Incident.
As a result, the lord of the castle was not stable until the early Edo period, and the ruling family changed rapidly.
Eventually, the Kuchiki family served as the castle's lord for 13 generations.
Let's unravel the history of the Fukuchiyama clan.

Fukuchiyama domain until the Kuchiki family ruled

The land of Fukuchiyama was originally ruled by Akechi Mitsuhide, who was ordered by Oda Nobunaga to capture Tamba, and built Fukuchiyama Castle.
When Akechi Mitsuhide defeated Oda Nobunaga during the Honnoji Incident, Hashiba Hideyoshi, who had left to attack China, returned with unusual speed, defeated Akechi Mitsuhide, and ruled the country.

Later, in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the Fukuchiyama domain was fought by Katsushige Nogi, who joined the western army and eventually became the lord of the castle, where he was defeated by Tadaoki Hosokawa.

Afterwards, Yutaka Arima was appointed the first lord of the castle in Fukuchiyama.
He entered Fukuchiyama with 60,000 koku, and later added 20,000 koku to become a daimyo with 80,000 koku.
The rebuilt Fukuchiyama Castle was renovated by Yutaka Arima from the Fukuchiyama Castle built by Mitsuhide Akechi.
He also put effort into developing the castle town and laid the foundations for the Fukuchiyama Domain.

In 1620, when the Arima Yutaka clan was transferred to the Kurume domain, Kazumasa Kobori, known as Kobori Enshu, ruled Fukuchiyama as the Fushimi magistrate.
Later, Okanabe Mori was transferred to the castle and became the lord of the castle, where he enacted the 31 Rules of Conduct.
Okanabe Mori was a very capable ruler, and he continued to build the foundations of his reign in Kameyama and Ogaki.

After Okanabe Mori was transferred, Norimichi Inaba was transferred from Settsu Nakajima.
Norimichi Inaba was a man with a temperamental problem, such as brutally slaughtering the people of his territory because he could not catch prey during hunting.
Furthermore, the Inaba Riots broke out after he begged Takahiro Kyogoku, the lord of the Miyazu domain in Tango Province, for yellowtail, and Norimichi Inaba was asked to explain by the shogunate, and it is said that he committed seppuku or committed suicide with a gun inside Fukuchiyama Castle. After that, Tadafusa Matsudaira ruled the Fukuchiyama domain. After serving as the lord of the castle for 24 years, he moved to Shimabara and established the Shimabara clan.

Reign of the Kuchiki family

During the early Edo period, the Fukuchiyama clan underwent rapid changes in ruling families until the 1660s.
The person who put an end to that was Tanemasa Kuchiki.

He was born as the eldest son of the first lord of the Tsuchiura domain, Tanetsuna Kuchiki, and was transferred to the Tamba Fukuchiyama domain for an additional 32,000 koku in 1669.
He was also a tea master of the Oribe school under the influence of his legal wife's father, Nobukatsu Okabe.
However, after the transfer, a natural disaster occurred in Fukuchiyama, and the expenses of the transfer quickly fell into financial difficulties.
Therefore, in 1691, he fired a large number of his vassals, Chiyuki and Ashigaru.

This financial deterioration also affected the second and third generation lords of the castle, and the fourth lord, Tenji Kuchiki, tried his best to promote civil government, but he did not achieve much.
