Daiganji Temple

Daiganji Temple, an ancient temple where Japan's three great Benzaiten are enshrined

Daiganji (Kameiyama Hokoin Daiganji) is a Shingon Buddhist temple, and although its founder is unknown, it is said to have been rebuilt by Ryokai in the early Kamakura period. Until the Shinbutsu Bunri-rei (law to separate Shinto and Buddhism) of the Meiji period, the temple was responsible for the repair and construction of many shrines and temples, including Itsukushima Shrine. The principal image is Itsukushima Benzaiten, who is said to bring good fortune and is one of the three great Benzaiten in Japan. The temple is usually closed to the public, and is only open to the public during the grand festival on June 17th. Other statues that remain are said to have been made by Kobo Daishi, as well as Buddha statues that were moved from nearby temples when the Shinbutsu Bunri-rei (law to separate Shinto and Buddhism) was issued.
