Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage Site that floats on the sea

Itsukushima Shrine, which was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996, was founded in the first year of the reign of Empress Suiko (593) by Saeki Kuramoto, who ruled Miyajima. The shrine is dedicated to three goddesses known as the Munakata Sanjo, who are in charge of the sea, safe navigation, and arts and crafts. During the Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori, who became the governor of Aki, constructed a floating shrine building in the Shinden-zukuri style. When the tide is high, you can enjoy the sight of the shrine building floating on the water. We also recommend visiting from the water by boat. There is also a large torii gate on the water, which you can approach on foot at low tide.
