Miyajima, a sacred island that is a World Heritage Site

Miyajima is a sacred island in the Seto Inland Sea that has been worshipped since ancient times as an island where the gods are worshipped. In 1996, Itsukushima Shrine, the primeval forest of the sacred mountain Misen, which is associated with Kobo Daishi, and the sea in the foreground were registered as World Heritage sites. During the Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori was a devout believer in Itsukushima Shrine. During the Sengoku period, it was also the site of the Battle of Itsukushima, where Sue Harukata and Mori Motonari fought. The large red torii gate and inner shrine building of Itsukushima Shrine, which stands floating in the sea, have been selected as one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Spots as "Aki no Miyajima," and are popular photo spots.
