Hiroshima Castle, the "carp castle" built by Mori Terumoto
Construction of Hiroshima Castle began in 1589 by Mori Terumoto. After Terumoto was transferred following the Battle of Sekigahara, Fukushima Masanori took over the castle, but was stripped of his title for renovating the castle without the shogunate's permission. Asano Nagaakira then took over, and it was the Asano clan's castle until the Meiji Restoration. Hiroshima Castle was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb, and the current five-story, five-storey castle tower was rebuilt in 1958. The Hira Yagura, Tamon Yagura and Taiko Yagura towers were also rebuilt in 1994.
